To install Java, type:

sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jre sun-java5-jdk

but if you want to install the latest version of Java, 1.6:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-jdk

but if you want to install the latest version of Java, 1.7:

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre

The openjdk-7-jre package contains just the Java Runtime Environment. If you want to develop Java programs then install the openjdk-7-jdk package.

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/bin
